Is It Time for a Health Check? Why Proactive Health Screening Could Be a Smart Move

Most of us only visit the doctor when something feels wrong. But what if we flipped that thinking? Just like your car gets an MOT to catch issues early, your body could benefit from the same kind of attention.
Proactive health screening isn’t about being a hypochondriac or expecting bad news - it’s about taking sensible steps to look after your long-term health. And for many people, that starts with a well-person health check.
Why Consider a Private Health Check?
Health checks can help identify early warning signs of conditions like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, liver problems and more—often before you notice any symptoms. Catching these issues early can make a real difference. It might mean making small lifestyle changes now, rather than facing more serious treatment down the line.
Some people choose to have a health check because they’ve had a recent health scare, or because a condition runs in their family. Others just want a bit of reassurance and a snapshot of where they’re at. Either way, it’s about giving yourself the information to make informed choices.

But Do I Really Need Health Screening?
That depends. If you’re young, fit, and have no symptoms or family history of illness, you might feel a health check isn’t necessary right now. And that’s perfectly valid. But if you’re in your 30s, 40s or beyond and you haven’t had one before - or if you’ve noticed changes in your energy levels, weight, or stress levels - it could be a good time to check in on your health.
It’s also worth noting that not all health screens are created equal. Some are over-the-top and include tests you don’t need, while others are too basic to be useful. The key is choosing one that’s right for you.
What’s Included in a Well-Person Health Check?
At our Canterbury clinic, we offer three levels of health screening: Bronze, Silver, and Gold - so you can choose the one that suits your needs and budget. All of our health checks include time with a clinician, blood tests, and personalised feedback based on your results. You’ll also have the chance to ask questions and discuss any concerns you might have.
We’re a small, independent clinic, which means you won’t feel rushed. You’ll be seen in a quiet, comfortable setting, and there’s free parking right outside the door. Our patients often tell us it feels much more personal than a big chain or hospital setting.
Isn’t It a Bit Self-Indulgent?
It’s a fair question, and one we hear quite a bit. But taking charge of your health isn’t indulgent, it’s practical. Many of us spend money on our cars, pets, or tech without thinking twice, yet put off investing in our own wellbeing.
A health screen isn’t a guarantee that nothing will go wrong, but it does give you a clearer picture of your current health, and the peace of mind that comes with it.
When Not to Book A Health Check
If you’re currently unwell or have new symptoms, a health screen isn’t the right route - see your GP instead. Health screens are best when you’re feeling well and want a general overview. They’re also not designed to replace regular NHS care, but to complement it.
